The Drought

Where there used to be a lake
is now a desert-like piece of land
with trees and rocks parched in the sun
like someone’s spirit
drained away in this hectic life

Where have you all gone,
the egrets, the grebes, the geese, the ducks?
– To some beautiful place
where there is plenty of water and food for us
They yodeled
against the dark silence of the
used-to-be lake

Come back soon
I miss you guys
the cormorants, the herons, the wigeons, the coots
and the lake
